RED BULL – BONUS IN A FAIRY TALE
Filming
We spent a lot of time thinking of how to combine spectacular snowboard stunts with an interesting story. We ended up using the fact that the athlete is from Russia to place our protagonist in the realm of Russian folk fairy tales. At first, the task seemed quite daunting, given difficult filming conditions, but in the end we succeeded!

The project couldn’t depend on the weather and environmental factors, so we decided to build our fairytale city in an indoor skiing facility “Snezhkom”. For our fairytale idea to work we needed certain attributes on set – a bow, an oak tree with a golden chain, a knight’s spear, a staircase leading up to Koschei’s throne, and a house on chicken legs. The average size of the figures were about 3-5 meters and the largest was 13 meters in length and 7 in width! The weight of some figures exceeded 1,5 tons!

Casting
We had to thoroughly pick and cast each character according to the set figures. Our Storyteller is a USSR National Artist, Emelya is a prominent media figure, while the 33 knights and their costumes were borrowed right from the “Crimson Sails” celebration event in St. Petersburg.

A lot of the stunts that were performed by the athlete were new to him including riding on chains. The process was challenging. It was easy to lose oneself in this fairytale reality even for such an experienced athlete as Denis. Nevertheless, he passed this test with flying colours, not unlike a true fairytale superhero!
Music
The musical arrangement deserves a separate mention. We were searching for a composition that could give our project a modern, yet folk sound. Our choice fell on Zventa Sventana, a band that isn’t afraid of experimenting with Russian folklore. The mix of 3 songs of the band perfectly fit the concept of the clip.

We spent a month preparing this project. Over 150 people were involved in the making of this clip. We managed to complete all of our work in 5 days (2 days on set assembly/disassembly, 3 days of filming) and all of them were spent in what is, in all actuality, a freezer.

We used 2 camera cranes, a steadycam, 3 ALEXA cameras, over 100 kilowatts of lighting equipment, 2 snowcats, and 2 snowmobiles. Over a 100 elements of set decorations and figures were painted, 12 figures of various shapes and sizes were constructed, over 70 kilograms of costumes were used on set, as well as a live pike, a talking crow, a real mermaid from Lukomorye, and Koschei’s egg with a needle inside.

The overall view count across all platforms exceeded 2,5 million.
